Rift Review

Rift

Rift Rift Opening

The Review

This game is Awesome.  The down side is that it is almost an exact copy of World of Warcraft, but with a twist.  It is what I hope World of Warcraft will be in 10 years.  That is how far ahead Rift is.  the graphics, the gameplay, the player creation system, all of it is a step up from Warcraft.

Warcraft User Interface   VS    Rift User Interface

Warcraft UIRift UI

If you are going to this game from world of Warcraft you will be pleased in that you won’t have to learn another game.  Virtually everything is the same including key bindings, a similar if not more complex talent tree system, and an almost “cut & paste” user interface lifted from Warcraft

Rift Character Creation

The character creation gives you an idea of the production quality of this game.  sure they could have given you a selection of five faces and 6 hairstyles but they went completely over the top with an incredible player creation system.  You are not likely to see your clone wandering around your home city in Rift.

Rift has 2 factions, the Guardians and the Defiant.   So it isn’t good versus evil. It is more like religion versus science, or more specifically spirituality versus technology.  Rift has 8 classes and each class has 4 sub-classes giving you a total of 32 classes.  Rift gets its name from the Rifts that open up and spill out bad guys that everyone in the zone comes running to destroy.

Trion, the company that created Rift, has shown us that you can make an MMORPG with an incredible production value and actually have it release bug free.  From our end we buy the game and install it.  Then when we logon and everything works.  From Trion’s perspective they have to anticipate gold spammers, bots, player lag prevention, and error proofing.  Very few MMO producers have been able to accomplish as clean and as problem free a launch as Trion has with  Rift.

For the life of me I cannot figure out how such a new game was able look so polished compared to Warcraft, especially considering that Warcraft has been around since 2004.
